Northwoods Wins National Better Government Competition

Pioneer Institute honors Northwoods’ technology for protective services social workers

DUBLIN, OH—June 18, 2014—Today Northwoods was named the winner of the Pioneer Institute’s 23rd annual Better Government Competition, which sought proposals for ideas that leverage technology to improve the public sector.

The Pioneer Institute is honoring Northwoods’ solution for protective services agencies for its ability to help improve caseload management, increase productivity, reduce overtime and staff turnover, lower travel costs, and most importantly protect children and families from abuse and neglect. The integrated solution utilizes Northwoods’ Compass® Pilot and Compass® CoPilot software to save social workers at human services agencies up to two hours every day so they can focus less time on paperwork, and more time on families.

"By recognizing Northwoods, the Pioneer Institute has amplified the voice of countless child advocates to address the dire need for technology in protective services to help social workers protect the most vulnerable. We are honored to be chosen as the Better Government Competition winner,” said Gary Heinze, president and CEO of Northwoods.

Compass CoPilot allows social workers to immediately retrieve and file case and client information and complete forms using a tablet computer from anywhere. They can also document their surroundings and share information with other workers, supervisors and directors to make critical decisions about the wellbeing of children and families, especially in crisis situations.

Northwoods’ proposal was selected by a panel of judges from the business, legal, non-profit and municipal government communities from among 150 submissions from around the country.

The Pioneer Institute, an independent, non-partisan, privately funded research organization, will recognize Northwoods and four runners-up at the 23rd annual Better Government Competition Awards Ceremony Sept. 11 in Boston, Massachusetts.
