#GivingTuesday: 15 Non-Profit Missions to Support This Giving Season

Looking for a worthy cause to support this giving season? For #GivingTuesday, we asked our employees to highlight non-profits that share our mission of helping vulnerable children, individuals, and families.

After-School All-Stars

  • Location: Based in Los Angeles and Washington, D.C. and serving 53 cities across the U.S.
  • Mission: Provide comprehensive after-school programs that keep children safe and help them succeed in school and life. Their vision is helping at-risk youth graduate high school, go to college, and find careers they love, while gaining the confidence and skills they need to lead and give back to their communities in the future.

Alex & Brandon Child Safety Center

  • Location: Based in Brainerd, Minnesota and serving the surrounding area.
  • Mission: Keep children safe from domestic violence while providing a family-friendly environment for parenting time. Non-custodial parents and their children can spend quality time together at the Safety Center while having a supervised visit in a family setting.
  • How to support it: Donate here. (Note: The Safety Center is a program of the Mid-Minnesota Women’s Center. You can also view the Women Center’s “Christmas Wish List” to see in-kind items to donate or a list of volunteer programs/opportunities.)

Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) of Central Ohio

  • Location: Based in Columbus, Ohio and serving 14 counties in the region.
  • Mission: Empower children to dream big and achieve success in life. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Ohio provides children facing adversity with strong, professionally-supported one-to-one mentoring relationships that change their lives for the better, forever.

Dare2tri

  • Location: Based in Chicago and serving athletes across the U.S. (check out their 2017 year in review for some really cool stats!)
  • Mission: Positively impact the lives of athletes with physical disabilities and visual impairments by developing their skills in para-triathlon, while inspiring the community at large. Dare2tri serves athletes of all ages and ability levels who have physical disabilities such as amputation, stroke, cerebral palsy, or blindness.

Driven Foundation

  • Location: Based in Columbus, Ohio and serving the region.
  • Mission: Promote perseverance and build hope through a relentless commitment to serve others. Founded by former NFL and Ohio State Buckeyes football teammates Roy Hall and Antonio Smith, Driven’s infrastructure and outreach programs are built on three core principles: perseverance (never give up), resilience (get back up), and assistance (help others up).

Family-to-Family

  • Location: Based in Hastings-on-Hudson, New York and serving communities nationally
  • Mission: Bring a large and seemingly intractable problem—poverty—into personal focus, making proactive, attainable results possible one family at a time. Family-to-Family provides food, personal hygiene products, and other basic life essentials to American families struggling with the challenges of poverty in communities with high levels of unemployment, significant percentages of residents without high school degrees, and low per capita incomes.

Local Matters

  • Location: Based in Columbus, Ohio and serving the surrounding region
  • Mission: Inspire action because of the effect food has on the quality of health, land, and communities. Local Matters supports the health and wellness of everyone from pre-schoolers to seniors and believes that food education, access, and advocacy are fundamental components of healthy communities.

My Very Own Blanket

  • Location: Based in Westerville, Ohio and serving nationally.
  • Mission: Providing every child in the foster care system with a blanket and pillowcase which gives them a feeling of comfort, security, and a smile. These gifts are comforting and familiar and children can take them from one home to another.

Ohio Community Life & Development

  • Location: Based in Circleville, Ohio and Canal Winchester, Ohio and serving families in Fairfield, Fayette, Franklin, and Pickaway Counties.
  • Mission: Promote community health, education, growth, and development, plus offer essential goods, outreach, classes, and support. Ohio Community Life & Development is currently partnering with Bed Brigade of Central Ohio to provide beds and bedding to families in need.
  • How to support it: Financial donations and grants, as well as material donations of twin beds, twin bed frames, and bedding material, can be sent to 323 Meadow Lane, Circleville, Ohio, 43113. You can also contact Travis Stonelock, president, for more information.

One Simple Wish

  • Location: Based in Trenton, New Jersey and serving 55,000 kids in 48 states.
  • Mission: Spread love, hope, and joy to children who have been impacted by abuse, neglect, and trauma. One Simple Wish partners with 700 social services agencies across the country to collect wishes from kids in foster care that anyone can help grant, plus aims to create awareness around the foster care system and each child’s individual story.
  • How to support it: Grant a wish or find other ways to donate here. (To celebrate its 10-year anniversary, One Simple Wish is running a campaign to raise $1 million by December 31.)

Rocking Horse Community Health Center

  • Location: Based in Springfield, Ohio with four locations serving Clark and Madison Counties.
  • Mission: Provide 13,000+ patients with comprehensive healthcare and a safe medical home. From crisis intervention and health education to medical, social, and behavioral health services, Rocking Horse creates an environment where quality services empower adults and children to improve their physical and emotional health.

Shoes 4 The Shoeless

  • Location: Based in Dayton, Ohio and serving the surrounding region.
  • Mission: Eliminate one of poverty’s most visible stigmas by providing new, properly fitting gym shoes and socks to thousands of children in need. According to their website, over 40% of children in the Dayton area (Montgomery County) live in poverty and 15,000 local kids each year wear shoes that don’t fit or are not fit to wear.

StandUp For Kids

  • Location: Based in Decatur, Georgia and serving 18 cities and counties
  • Mission: Build communities where all youth know care, feel loved, and have a support system to help them move quickly from surviving to thriving. StandUp For Kids serves unaccompanied homeless, at-risk youth, and young parents with children of their own up to their 25th birthday through four core programs: street outreach, outreach centers, mentoring, and apartment support.

Together We Rise

  • Location: Based in Brea, California and serving kids nationwide.
  • Mission: Transforming the way youth navigate through the foster care system in America. Together We Rise brings resources to foster youth and uses service-learning activities to educate volunteers on issues surrounding the foster care system.They also provide thousands of foster youth with new bicycles, college supplies, and “sweet cases” (duffel bags) so they do not have to travel from home to home with their belongings in a trash bag.
  • How to support it: Learn ways to donate money or products (crayons, blankets, bikes, teddy bears, etc.) here or host/support a fundraising event.

Wholesome Wave

  • Location: Based in Bridgeport, Connecticut and serving 1,400+ farmers markets and grocery stores in 49 states.
  • Mission: Empower under-served consumers to make better food choices. The organization partners with farmers and farmers markets, community leaders, healthcare providers, other nonprofits, and government entities to implement programs that increase affordable access to healthy, locally grown fruit and vegetables.
