Moore County DSS Social Workers Getting Mobile App to Improve Safety

Mobile solution to help address staff turnover, save money

DUBLIN, OH—January 27, 2015—Moore County Department of Social Services (DSS) in North Carolina is giving social workers a mobile tool to help them better protect abused and neglected children and adults.

Northwoods’ mobile document management solution, Compass® CoPilot, will help 32 child protective services and adult protective services social workers access and update documentation using an iPad® app from the field, rather than using paper forms and documents.

The mobile app allows social workers to spend more time with families by reducing the time they spend completing required paperwork. Time spent in the field with the families is the best way to improve safety outcomes.

Moore County DSS director John Benton says the mobile technology will improve the accuracy and completeness of documentation and help social workers make critical decisions about safety.

“Compass® CoPilot is a great tool we can give social workers. If we have accurate, up-to-date and accessible documentation, we will have the information we need at hand to make life-changing decisions for our families,” Benton said.

Protective services social work is a high-stress, demanding job that comes with high turnover rates. Reducing the paperwork burden reduces stress on social workers, which improves retention rates and decreases costs to train new social workers. A return on investment analysis estimates Moore County DSS will potentially save at least $300,000 over 10 years on costs for personnel, travel, and office supplies by implementing the new solution.

Moore County DSS already uses Northwoods’ document management software, Compass® Pilot, in the economic services department, which provides Medicaid, Food & Nutrition Services and Work First benefits, and protective services department.
